A biodegradable leather alternative, crafted from banana peel waste -transforming an overlooked byproduct into a high-performance material.

Bananas are one of the world’s most widely cultivated crops, with 114 million tonnes produced annually. However, the peels account for nearly one-third of the total weight, resulting in roughly 39.9 million tonnes of waste each year. Instead of being discarded into landfills, BioNana repurposes this abundant resource, offering a sustainable alternative to high-demand materials like leather.
Innovative Properties:
Strong & durable - maintains integrity while remaining pliable
Flexible & lightweight - adaptable for various applications
Tactile & organic - retains a natural, earthy texture
Resembles leather & bioplastics - offering an alternative without petrochemicals
End of Life:
Completely biodegradable & home compostable - breaks down naturally
Regenerative - decomposes into nutrients that enrich the soil
A circular solution - waste returns to nature
Applications:
BioNana’s versatility allows it to replace traditional materials in multiple industries, including:
Textiles & fashion - sustainable leather alternatives for accessories
Packaging & food-safe applications - reducing single-use plastic waste
Soft plastic replacement - offering a plant-based solution for disposable items
As a proof of concept, BioNana was developed into a coin wallet, a small fold-over pocket wallet where organic form meets function. The design highlights BioNana’s flexibility, durability, and tactile qualities, creating a grounding user experience.
