A high-performance, innovative biocomposite made from agricultural waste: strong wool and an animal-based bioresin.

This project was developed in collaboration with The Campaign for Wool New Zealand to address the declining value and use of strong wool. Despite its abundance and exceptional properties - including durability, antibacterial nature, and moisture-wicking abilities - strong wool is often overlooked in modern industries. This project reimagines its potential by transforming it into a high-performance, biodegradable biocomposite, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional materials.
Innovative Properties:
Durable & strong - maintains integrity under stress
Flexible - adaptable for various applications
Antibacterial & odor-resistant - naturally inhibits bacterial growth
Moisture-wicking - regulates humidity and enhances comfort
End of Life:
Completely biodegradable & home compostable - leaves no harmful residues
Regenerative - breaks down into nutrients that enrich the soil
A circular solution - designed for sustainability at every stage
Applications:
Biowool has vast potential across multiple industries, including:
Outdoor gear - lightweight, durable components
Furniture & homewares - sustainable alternatives to synthetic materials
Yoga mats & accessories - leveraging its natural antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties
Phone cases & consumer products - strong yet biodegradable solutions
As a proof of concept, Biowool was used to design and prototype ergonomic ski/hiking pole handles that mold to the shape of the user’s hand, enhancing grip and comfort in extreme conditions. Get in touch to explore the design process portfolio.
