A home-compostable bioplastic, crafted from discarded eggshells and algae-based polymers - transforming post-consumer waste into a durable, regenerative material.

Eggshells are rich in calcium carbonate, the same mineral found in ceramics, giving them natural strength, rigidity, and lightweight properties. Despite this, millions of tonnes of eggshells are discarded as waste each year. BioOvo repurposes this overlooked byproduct, offering a bioplastic alternative that combines ceramic-like qualities with plastic-like versatility.
Innovative Properties:
Lightweight yet strong - ceramic-like durability without the weight
Flexible & tough - withstands wear while maintaining structural integrity
Water-resistant - suitable for functional applications
Tactile & organic - smooth, natural texture
End of Life:
Completely biodegradable & home compostable - decomposes naturally
Regenerative - adds calcium and nutrients back into the soil
A circular solution - waste transformed into function, then returned to nature
Applications:
BioOvo’s unique balance of strength and flexibility makes it ideal for:
Sculpture & art objects - a lightweight, formable alternative to ceramics
Lighting & homewares - functional, decorative products
Sustainable packaging - replacing plastic in protective or molded packaging
As a proof of concept, BioOvo was developed into a reusable egg carton and egg cups, demonstrating its strength, water resistance, and ceramic-like properties in a real-world application. This project showcases how discarded eggshells can be transformed into a functional, closed-loop material.
